Just had my annual review with my department chair. The first thing I said was that her review seemed fair. The first thing she said was to ask how she can help me to achieve my goals for the next year.
That’s about the best way to start off an interview like this, and I told her so.

Why deal with conflict when you can avoid it until the weekend?

I guess it’s that time of year. I met with my boss this morning. It’s maybe the third time we’ve been in the same space for more than half an hour over the last year. He told me that I “exceeded expectations,” the highest rating our company allows. We’re looking at changing my career track so I can keep climbing the company ladder. I hit the ceiling on my current track about five years ago.
It’s been great working for this guy. Probably the best supervisor I’ve ever had.

But you didn't quit last time, what will be the catalyst now?

It’s taken YEARS to get to here. I finally landed in a spot where they want to expand my capabilities instead of pigeon-holing me into a role as the IT or GIS guy. Surprise, surprise! I really can answer questions about flooding and federal money and disaster recovery! I can even manage projects! Now I have to get PMP certified so the engineers believe I can run projects without their oversight.
I’d love to see them teach four classes in a semester without a TA and keep a research program on track while also dealing with academic committee commitments.

I didn’t go in there to quit, I went in there to voice concern. I do t think he's going to to address any of it so I'm done.

I will miss your intersection, but from everything you've told us about working with that guy ... Yeah. Sounds like it's time to ramble on.

Lol I feel ya.
Banner year, covered for a counterpart that quit halfway through the year. Made many systematic improvements.

That’s a good reason. But he may realize that only after you’re gone.

That’s me.
But you’ll still answer IT questions, right? Right?

Yeah, now it’s up to me. But then it always was.

I still solve all kinds of geospatial problems. For you, I’ll still answer IT questions! :)
